Portfolio Seminar

If you are a Writing Arts major or minor, or have chosen the Writing Arts sequence in your Liberal Studies major, you are required to take Portfolio Seminar.
​Note to minors and Liberal Studies students: Once you sign up for Portfolio Seminar, you will be assigned a faculty member from Writing Arts to read your analysis statement, which is written during the class.
Please review the Commonly Asked Questions—By Students if you are planning to take Portfolio Seminar and wondering why the schedule says TBA, if you're wondering what semester is best for you to take the course, or to address other questions about the course.

Introduction

The Department of Writing Arts has adopted a set of core values we want our undergraduates to understand and learning outcomes we want them to achieve. Whether you plan to be a professional writer, teacher of young writers, or something else, we believe all students should understand and practice these core values.

Portfolio Seminar is one of two senior-level capstone courses (along with Methods of Analysis and Evaluating Writing) in the Writing Arts undergraduate programs. Portfolio Seminar is a one-credit course for which you submit an electronic portfolio of work (five distinct pieces) completed during your Writing Arts career, about which you will write an extended reflection, called the Analysis Statement. The portfolio, including the Analysis Statement, once fully drafted, will undergo peer-review, and then after you complete the Analysis Statement, your advisor will review and evaluate it. For all students in the Ric Edelman College of Communication and Creative Arts, your advisor is now listed in Banner on your GRAD screen. Please follow this link for Student Self Service and log into your account.

Portfolio Seminar provides you the opportunity to reflect on your Writing Arts career via an Analysis Statement (or AS), in which you demonstrates your understanding of the department’s core values and having achieved the correlative learning outcomes through your writing performances included in the portfolio. The AS will constitute the major portion of your Portfolio Seminar grade.

I. Writing Arts students will demonstrate understanding of a variety of genre conventions and exhibit rhetorical adaptability in applying those conventions.

II. Writing Arts students will understand theories of writing and reading and be able to apply them to their own writing.


III. Writing Arts students will demonstrate the ability to critically read complex and sophisticated texts in a variety of subjects.

IV. Writing Arts students will be able to investigate, discover, evaluate and incorporate material into the creation of text.

V. Writing Arts students will demonstrate self-critical awareness of their writing.

VI. Writing Arts students will understand the impact evolving technologies have on the creation of written texts.

VII. Writing Arts students will show an understanding of the power of the written word and that such power requires ethical responsibilities in its application.


VIII.
Writing Arts students will understand the rhetorical nature of style in writing, including the dynamics of usage, mechanics, and grammar, dependent as they are on context, purpose, and audience.

IX. Writing Arts students will have knowledge of the professions available to them or will be able to articulate how they will apply their understanding of writing in their future career, or both.
