Syllabus Requirements

Note: Suggested language is available via the Comp I default syllabus (and default syllabi exist for other FYW courses).

Elements required by university (per university’s Syllabus Policy)
  • Course title and number
  • Meeting times and location(s)
  • Email contact for Instructor
  • Office hours (adjunct faculty may put “by appointment” statement instead)
  • Course goals and description 
  • Proposed topical outline, where appropriate
  • Rowan Core statements and outcomes (for Rowan Core courses; this includes I/CCI, CCII, Honors CCI, Honors CCII, and CW1); these are provided by Rowan Core committee and appear on FYW default syllabi
  • Grading guidelines and breakdown of the final grade; state whether or not course can be taken for pass/fail credit
  • Course requirements 
    • learning activities to expect 
    • course materials students need access to
  • Attendance Policy (that meets parameters of the university policy and FYW if relevant); should also link to the university policy
  • Any other department or instructor policies (i.e., policies to which students are held accountable)

University policies that must be, at minimum, referenced and linked to:
  • Academic Integrity Policy
  • Plagiarism Detection Services (If using TurnItIn via Blackboard--if using, there needs to be an “opt out” mechanism) 
  • Classroom Behavior Policy
  • Mobile Electronic Device Policy (can be embedded in classroom behavior)
  • Attendance Policy

Accommodations Statement that the university wants to appear in full:
Your academic success is important. If you have a documented disability that may have an impact upon your work in this class, please contact me. Students must provide documentation of their disability to the Academic Success Center in order to receive official University services and accommodations.  The Academic Success Center can be reached at 856-256-4234.   • Statement of policy that students must have a passing portfolio in order to pass the class
  • Contents of the Final Portfolio (itemized list) and clear statement that instructor-commented drafts must be included to have a passing portfolio
  • Late Work Policy if there are consequences for late work (clear statement of conditions under which it will be accepted and any penalties imposed)
  • Rowan Success Network powered by Starfish® statement (language on default syllabus)
  • First-Year Writing Program Position on Language and Correctness (language on default syllabus)
  • If Rowan Seminar section, some explanation of what that entails
    ​

Recommended elements (technically not required, but frequently included)
  • Course CRN
  • Welcome or inclusion statement
  • Explanation of role that Blackboard or course web site plays in the course
  • Grading scale (how numeric grade translates to letter grade)
  • Description of and information on the Rowan Writing Center
