The undergraduate major in Writing Arts provides students an in-depth understanding of the multiple facets of written communication. Through a variety of courses and learning experiences, students develop their awareness of writing's theoretical foundations and practical applications. As one of the few departments of writing in the U.S., Writing Arts is uniquely positioned to help students learn to communicate effectively within our dynamic culture.

The change from “concentration" to “minor" will be reflected in transcripts beginning Fall 2017.
Creative Writing | Advising Sheet
- The minor in Creative Writing allows students with an interest in creative writing to receive advanced and specialized education for critical analysis, skill development and application. The concentration aims to refine the literary techniques of creative writers.
Technical and Professional Writing | Advising Sheet
- This 18-hour minor allows students to study techniques and strategies used in genres of technical and professional writing, including within technical, medical, scientific, nonprofit, and other professional contexts. Students will learn to write in various professional and technical genres, such as reports, proposals, instructions, and educational materials, and will learn to compose for a variety of audiences. A particular focus of the minor will be in learning to communicate complex information to lay audiences. Towards this end, students will gain skills in audience analysis, document design, style and editing, and research. Students will become more aware of theories and strategies of writing through close rhetorical analysis of professional and technical exemplary texts.
New Media | Advising Sheet
- The minor in New Media allows students with an interest in new media to receive advanced and specialized education for critical analysis, skill development and application. The concentration defines new media as evolving media that focuses on interactive and digital technology, often disseminated through non-traditional, social networks.
Publishing and Writing for the Public | Advising Sheet
- The Publishing and Writing for the Public minor emphasizes the importance of understanding how emerging technologies challenge traditional notions of what it means to write and to be a writer. Students in this minor will work in and with the affordances and limits of various technologies, including social medias, visual composing tools, electronic writing spaces, and web sites. Students minoring in Publishing and Writing for the Public will understand the implications of technology on writing as well as the ways that technology further nuances their relationship with an audience.
