Writing in the Medical Professions
Prerequisites: CCII and 60 Credit Hours
This course introduces students to a variety of genres of medical writing that exist in public and professional arenas. Students will analyze the rhetorical and social elements of medical discourse in order to better understand medicine as a discipline and culture and learn to produce texts that meets the needs of medical discourse communities. Topics might include narrative medicine, medical rhetoric, health literacy, disability and health, and doctor-patient communication. Students might practice writing in a number of genres including pathographies, patient education materials, medical reviews, public health campaigns, medical reports and proposals, and graduate school personal statements.
