TONIGHT: Writing Arts Colleague Delivers ‘Last Lecture’
Grayson Morley, one of our department’s adjunct professors, will deliver Rowan University’s 10th annual “Last Lecture” at 7 p.m. this evening – Monday, December 2 – in the Eynon Ballroom of the Chamberlain Student Center. Grayson, who was selected in a four-way vote conducted on ProfLink, will be following in the tradition of professors who are ceremoniously asked to pass along wisdom to students as if it was their final lecture. The concept received nationwide attention in 2007 when former Carnegie Mellon computer science professor Randy Pausch was selected to deliver a last lecture at his university and soon thereafter received a what would be fatal diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. . . . Congratulations, Grayson; we’ll see you there! Colleague to Highlight Reading at Philadelphia Book Store Lecturer Jade Jones will be the featured reader this coming Thursday, December 5 at the final 2019 presentation in the Emerging Writers Series sponsored by the Rutgers University-Camden Master of Fine Arts in Writing program. The reading will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Wooden Shoes Books and Records, 704 South Street, in Philadelphia (19147). Jade, who also is Managing Editor of Glassworks magazine, received her B.A. from Princeton University, her M.F.A. from the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and was the 2019 recipient of the PEN/Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers. Click here for more details. Glassworks Nominates Three Students for Award Consideration Glassworks, the literary journal of our Master of Arts in Writing program, has nominated three student staff members for recognition in the Intro Journals Project, a contest run by the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP). The three students are Joe Gramigna (4+1 M.A. student) for creative nonfiction, Eric Avedissian (M.A. student) for fiction, and Dina Folgia (dual B.A. major in Writing Arts and RTF) for poetry. The contest is designed to recognize the best new work by students in AWP member programs. It’s considered an honor to be nominated and these selections are impressive additions to a student’s resume. This is the first time Glassworks has made such nominations. You can learn more about the Project by clicking here Colleague Essay Published in Cultural Studies Book on Trump Lecturer Jackie Partyka is one of 17 writers and educators to have their work included in a new contemporary cultural studies book, Trump Fiction: Essays on Donald Trump in Literature, Film, and Television. Debuting on Amazon this past weekend, the book is – its promotional flyer says – “filled with smart observations and juicy tidbits” about how cultural artifacts from such authors as Thomas Pynchon and Salman Rushdie as well as Sesame Street and Sex and the City both presage and detail Trump’s journey from real estate to realty TV to his current position. Trump Fiction is available in both hardcover and as an eBook. Contact Jackie for more details. For Your Calendar:

Rowan Writing Arts Events Update
Week of November 18, 2019 Welcome to the Writing Arts family, Eamon Joseph Brown Colleague Kate Brown and her husband Jason are proud to announce the birth of their second child, 7-pound, 15-ounce Eamon Joseph Brown. Although his October 30 arrival was a bit earlier than expected, Eamon and his mom are now at home and doing well. Big sister Ainsley (above, at left) is keeping a watchful eye on her new sibling. Congratulations Kate and Jason from all of us here at The Vic. The Last Dharma Talk of 2019 Takes Place Today in Evergreen Hall Former colleague Jeff Maxson is back on campus this afternoon for his final Dharma Talk of the semester. The session will be today, Monday, November 18, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the Interfaith & Spiritual Exploration Center at Evergreen Hall. The practice – as it is called – will feature such relaxing and contemplative activities as walking meditation and centering in peace. Jeff, who retired from our department earlier this year, was ordained in 2012 as a lay member of the Order of Interbeing within the Plum Village Tradition of Zen master Tich Nhat Hanh. Digital Literacy Highlights Next Week’s Brown Bag Meeting The final First-Year Writing Brown Bag Professional Development Session of the fall semester will focus on “Digital Literacy in Our Writing Classrooms.” Two meetings will be held next Tuesday, November 26 in the Fourth Floor Conference Room at Victoria Hall, one at 3:30 p.m. and one at 5 p.m. Attendees will strategize on how to create assignments and design learning activities within an online environment as the department moves toward the use of more digital and multimodal genres. Please contact Kristine Lafferty for more information. In Case You Missed the News . . . Alumni Ric and Jean Edelman last week announced a $10 million endowment to the College of Communication and Creative Arts to be used exclusively for need-based and academic student scholarships. Jean, a member of the University’s Board of Trustees, received her bachelor’s degree in consumer economics and marketing in 1981 while Ric earned his B.A. in communications in 1980 and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree in 1999. Late Withdrawal Deadline Coming Up Early Next Week Another sign the semester is drawing to a close is the arrival of the Late Withdrawal Deadline. Next Monday, November 25 at 5 p.m. is the cutoff for students to withdraw from classes with just an instructor’s signature and the signature of their department chair. After that date, the Hardship Withdrawal period begins and – unlike previous years when intercession by the Dean was required – students now must go directly to the Registrar with their explanation of why a course withdrawal so late in the term is necessary. Publication, Class Trip Highlight One Colleague’s Semester Want to know if you are or a friend is a “Popularity Prince or Princess,” a “Rah Rah,” or a “Camouflaged Control Freak?” Then you should read “How to Spot and Survive Fanatical Sports Parents,” the latest published article by colleague Keri Mikulski. She says this piece – published in the Sammiches & Psych Meds/Mock Moms online parenting journal – is “much more biting and sarcastic” than her usual work. . . . Not long after the article appeared, Keri was on the road to New York City where she took a few students (at right) in her Writing and Craft for Elementary Students class to hear Lucy Calkins speak at a writing conference and workshop at Columbia University. Calkins – founding director of the Columbia Teachers College Reading and Writing Project – is the author of the textbook (The Art of Teaching Writing) Keri uses in her Writing and Craft class. Have your students contact Jade Jones for more information and to enroll for the one-credit workshop weekend. Act Now: Only A Few Thanksgiving Items Left to Be Purchased Please contact Stephanie Heiser at your earliest convenience if you want to donate items for the family Writing Arts has “adopted” for the holiday season. While a few non-perishable food items remain on the list, there still is a need for financial donations toward supermarket gift cards to allow for the purchase of such perishable items as a turkey, milk, pie, etc. View the list here. A Zine Is Born at Philadelphia Community Writing Conference Following in the footsteps of American patriot Thomas Paine, who produced the first zine – “Common Sense” – in 1776, members of the Coalition for Community Writing held their third biennial Conference on Community Writing in Philadelphia last month. Rowan Writing Arts and the College of Communication and Creative Arts sponsored a workshop entitled “The Soapbox: Community Print Shop and Zine Library” that gave attendees an overview of the history of zines and their role in the communities they serve. By the end of the three-hour session, the group produced a collaborative zine (see photo at right) that expressed their passions and interests as well as their experiences at the conference. Click here to view the zine the attendees created. Neurodiversity Survey to Help Boost Awareness, Services The university’s Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is inviting all Rowan faculty, staff, and students to take the Neurodiversity Task Force’s Neurodiversity Survey. Neurodiversity is a viewpoint that brain differences are normal and that those differences should be recognized and respected as any other human variation. These differences can include Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Tourette Syndrome among others. Rowan Writing Arts Events Update Week of October 21, 2019 Coming Soon: Order Your Personalized Rowan Writing Arts Apparel Just in time for holiday gifts, even if it is a gift for yourself, we soon will have access to a web-based ordering site where Writing Arts faculty can buy shirts, jackets, and sweaters emblazoned with a Rowan Writing Arts logo and – if you’d like – your name. The site will be administered by Ace Screen Printing and Embroidery, located at 24 West High Street. Colleagues Marie Flocco and Kristine Lafferty are putting the finishing touches on the website, helping to design and seek approval for a Writing Arts department logo, and selecting a limited number of items to be featured. Please contact Marie or Kristine for more information or to offer suggestions Glassworks Fall 2019 Issue Debuts This Thursday Evening at the Art Gallery Local poets Laura Fiorentino and Alison Lubar will be part of the festivities this coming Thursday, October 24 as Glassworks launches its 19th issue, the Fall 2019 edition of the peer-reviewed literary journal. Fiorentino and Lubar will read their poems that appear in this latest issue along with other selections from their portfolios. In addition, students from this semester’s “Editing the Literary Journal” graduate class and members of the Glassworks staff also will be reading. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Rowan Art Gallery, across Mick Drive from Victoria Hall at 301 West High Street. Contact Editor-in-Chief Katie Budris for details. Published in the fall and spring, Glassworks is sponsored by our Master of Arts in Writing program. Have Your Students Sign Up Now for Our Winter Retreat Dinner with a publisher, faculty readings, and craft workshops are just a few of the highlights of our premier Writing Arts Winter Retreat scheduled for this January. We’re less than three months away from the weekend of January 10, 11, and 12, 2020 and our faculty-student get-away at the historic Pendle Hill resort, about an hour from Glassboro in Wallingford, Delaware County, Pa. The retreat, for which students will receive one academic credit, kicks off on Friday the 10th with a welcome dinner and a reading from several Writing Arts faculty members from some of their in-progress work. Saturday the 11th starts early with students choosing between a two-hour fiction or creative nonfiction workshop followed by lunch and another two-hour slot for either a poetry or children’s literature workshop. After several hours of on-own writing time and more workshops, dinner will feature remarks from an as-yet-to-be-announced publisher, followed by a student reading of works that were crafted over the weekend. Sunday morning the 12th is breakfast and farewells. For more details, please contact colleague Jade Jones or Writing Arts department chair Drew Kopp. Help a Local Family Have A Happy – and Filling – Thanksgiving Day In addition to our ongoing support of Rowan’s student food bank, The S.H.O.P., the Writing Arts Department is once again sponsoring a local family for Thanksgiving and providing all the fixings for a full holiday dinner. This is the time of year for family, friends, and festivities, but not everyone has the resources to feast on turkey, stuffing, potatoes, and pumpkin pie as do most of us. Working through the university’s Office of Volunteerism, Community Engagement & Commuter Services, we have chosen to supply all the non-perishable food items and supermarket gift cards to feed a large family (defined as six to seven people). The shopping list for a family of this size contains 38 items, so if everyone can donate one can, box, or bag, we should – considering the size of our department – easily meet that quota. We also will gladly accept monetary donations for a supermarket gift card that will be used for perishables. Click here to view the SignUp Genius created by colleague Stephanie Heiser to keep track of what we’ve received and what’s left to be purchased. For more details, please contact either Stephanie or me. Thank you very much for your help! More Accolades for Our Writing Arts Faculty Family Following up on the recent publication of his fiction article “The New Priest” in the literary journal On the Seawall, colleague Grayson Morley has received word another of his works – “The Henchmen” – is being recognized as one of several Distinguished Stories among the Best American Short Stories of 2019. Please feel free to contact Grayson for more information. This is another example of the many talented professionals we have in our department who are passing along their knowledge and experience to students in our Writing Arts community and to all first-year writing students campus-wide. Keep up the great work, Grayson, and congratulations! For Your Calendar: Today – Monday, October 21 – is a busy day on and around the main Glassboro campus of Rowan University:

Rowan Writing Center Wins Access and Inclusion Award!
Congratulations to Celeste DelRusso and her team at the Rowan Writing Center! It was announced yesterday they will be receiving an Access & Inclusion Award from the university’s Academic Success & Disability Resources Center later this month as part of Access and Inclusion Week 2019. The award is a fitting kickoff to a year of celebration at the Writing Center as it marks its 10th year of helping students campus-wide become stronger, more confident writers. Celeste and her tutors will be honored on Monday, October 21 at 10 a.m. in Room 221 of the Chamberlain Student Center. Running from October 18-25, Access & Inclusion Week celebrates the accomplishments of individuals with disabilities in our university community. Formerly called “Disabilities Awareness Week,” the name was changed in 2015, according to Resources Center Director John Woodruff, to better reflect Rowan’s culture of embracing and celebrating differences. Nearly 10 percent of the university’s student body – roughly 2,000 individuals – have disabilities registered with the Resources Center.
Writing Arts ‘Meet and Greet’ Fills Victoria 200 With Students, Faculty, and Pizza
Last week’s inaugural reception to bring together the Writing Arts student community and our department’s faculty was a hit, judging both by the number of people and by the volume of excited and happy voices that filled Victoria 200. About two dozen students, and an equal number of professors, mingled and ate pizza and shared discussions about the benefits offered by our courses, programs, and activities. During the reception, colleague Jade Jones and department chair Drew Kopp formally announced our first Writing Arts Winter Writing Retreat, scheduled for January 10-12, 2020 at the historic Pendle Hill resort in Wallingford, Pa. Please have your students contact Jade if they are interested in attending the Retreat.
Local Poets to Help Launch Glassworks Fall Issue
The Fall 2019 issue of the Glassworks literary journal debuts on Thursday, October 24 with a reception and reading at the Rowan Art Gallery at 6:30 p.m. Local authors Laura Fiorentino and Alison Lubar – who both have poems in the new issue – will be reading selections of their work along with members of the Glassworks staff and students in this semester’s “Editing the Literary Journal” graduate class. The Rowan Art Gallery is across Mick Drive from Victoria Hall at 301 West High Street. Contact Editor-in-Chief Katie Budris (budris [at] rowan [dot] edu) for details. Published in the fall and spring, Glassworks is sponsored by our Master of Arts in Writing program.
‘Rowan Rules!’ at Mighty Writers, Collingswood Festivals
Rowan Writing Arts ruled the roost at two regional writing events held on back-to-back Saturdays in late September/early October. First, colleagues Nicole Cesares, Tiffany DeRewal, and Jackie Partyka were among the seven faculty members and interns who supervised a “Magnetic Poetry” activity at the 2nd annual Mighty Writers “MightyFest” on September 28 in Logan Square in Philadelphia. A week later, on October 5, colleague Jason Luther proudly represented his “Zines!” booth, one of the two side-by-side tents staffed by 15 Writing Arts faculty and interns at the 17th annual Collingswood Book Festival. We collected several dozen email addresses that day for our raffle of a gift basket filled with Rowan swag (hat, T-shirt) and several faculty-written books. For your Calendar:
Inaugural Student-Faculty Social Scheduled for October 2
The first formal social gathering of Writing Arts students and faculty is scheduled for Wednesday, October 2 at 3:30 p.m. in Victoria 200. This meet-and-greet event is designed to strengthen the connection we have with our Writing Arts Learning Community and also give us an opportunity to publicize our upcoming Writing Arts Winter Writing Retreat to Wallingford, PA on January 10-12, 2020. Hopefully, as 3:30 p.m. on Wednesdays is our open period, most faculty and students will be able to attend. As an added incentive to students (and faculty), pizza will be served and, for those who enjoy some friendly competition, there will be writing- and word-related games on hand. Please click here to RSVP and encourage your students to do so as well. Contact Amanda Haruch for more information. Charles Barkley Event Sells Out in Two Days During his 16-year Hall of Fame National Basketball Association career, former Philadelphia 76ers player Charles Barkley often was criticized for his lumbering trips up and down the hardwood during games. However, there was nothing slow about the speed with which tickets disappeared for Barkley’s Tuesday, October 1 appearance here at Rowan University. Less than two days after the event was announced, all 800 free tickets for his appearance in Wilson Hall’s Pfleeger Concert Hall were claimed in the online registration process. During the event, Barkley will be interviewed by Neil Hartman, the Emmy Award-winning former sports broadcaster for Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia and the new Director of the Center for Sports Communication and Social Impact in the College of Communication and Creative Arts. Barkley, who played at Auburn University and also for the NBA’s Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets, won two Olympic gold medals as part of the 1992 and 1996 “Dream Team” squads and was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History
Collingswood Book Festival Right Around the Corner
This Saturday, October 5, the Rowan Writing Arts community outreach venue crosses back over the Delaware to Camden County for the 17th annual Collingswood Book Festival, an event that will run the full length of the borough along Haddon Avenue from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s a day of writing-related readings, presentations, and exhibits with in excess of 5,000 attendees on hand. Rowan Writing Arts will be in booths 106 and 108. . . . Please attend either or both of these free, family-friendly events if you can and contact me at your earliest convenience if you are available to help staff either MightyFest or the Collingswood fair.
Community Writing Conference Coming to Philadelphia
The biennial Conference on Community Writing will be held in Philadelphia on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 17, 18, and 19 at Drexel University, 31st and Chestnut streets, Philadelphia. Rowan Writing Arts and the CCCA are helping to co-sponsor one of the Saturday workshops: “The Soapbox: Community Print Shop and Zine Library.” The conference – staged by the Coalition for Community Writing based at the University of Colorado, Boulder – offers a series of speeches, workshops, think tanks, roundtables, and traditional panels focused on community literacy, social justice, and writing for publics. For those seeking a full immersion experience, The Study at University City (33rd and Chestnut) is offering a conference room rate of $199 a night (down from their rack rate of $444 a night). For more information and to register, click here or contact colleague Jason Luther. Writing Arts Diversity Council Offers Development Opportunities Providing faculty members with the skills and tools to become stronger advocates of diversity, equity, and inclusion is the main goal of our department’s Diversity Council, which is now in its second year of operation. Colleague Rachael Shapiro says the council also is creating instructional resources for use in the First-Year Writing Program and for other department courses. There is no limit on the number of members serving on the council, so everyone is invited to attend and participate. Contact Rachael for more information. Once all department committee assignments have been made, the dates of this year’s Diversity Council meetings will be announced. In the meantime, please take a minute and fill out this anonymous and confidential Diversity Survey to add your voice and opinions to the ongoing department conversation on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Long-Time Glassboro Mayor McCabe Dead at Age 87 The municipal and university communities woke Sunday morning to the news that former Glassboro mayor and key player in the development of Rowan Boulevard – Leo McCabe – died at the age of 87. “We lost a good friend,” Rowan president Ali Houshmand said in the official university announcement of McCabe’s passing. “(He) had the uncanny ability to look beyond day-to-day challenges,” Houshmand said, “and keep everyone focused on achieving what was for the better good.” McCabe served four terms as mayor from 2002 to 2018 and the $426 million public-private Rowan Boulevard project was conceived and came to fruition on his watch. Before becoming mayor, McCabe – who earned a Ph.D. in organic chemistry at The Ohio State University – worked as Manager of Fuels and Air Quality Research at Mobil Oil

On display now through October 26, 2019 This exhibit addresses the connection between culture, mass media, and personal identity through the eyes of a central female figure by investigating the shared collective unconscious, historical narratives, and subliminal imagery that shapes who we are and how we perceive the world around us. Rowan University Art Gallery - 301 High Street West, Glassboro • FREE Volunteering Opportunities (October) Rowan University’s “Out of This World” Homecoming celebration takes place the morning and early afternoon of Saturday, October 12.
