Denise Gess Literary Awards

About
The competition, named in honor of the late Writing Arts Associate Professor Denise Gess, offers cash awards in poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction categories semi-annually. The awards consist of three different categories: Rowan University Award for Poetry, Edward J. Czwartacki Award for Short Fiction, and Pat B. Tweedie Award for Creative Nonfiction with cash prizes for first, second, and third place in each category and a list of honorable mentions. The award ceremonies feature brief readings from the winners, speakers, and refreshments.

​2023 Denise Gess Literary Awards

The Rowan Writing Arts Department in the Ric Edelman College of Communication and Creative Arts is pleased to announce the 2023 Denise Gess Literary Awards.

This student competition, named in honor of the late Writing Arts Associate Professor Denise Gess, offers cash awards for the winning poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction submissions in each category of $200 for first place, $100 for second, and $50 for third.
 
All currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students in good standing at Rowan University are eligible to submit their original work for consideration by 11:59 p.m, Monday, March 27, 2023 at the link below. Students may enter in more than one genre. Submit at tiny.cc/dgess
 
The 2023 Edward J. Czwartacki Award for Fiction will be presented to a Rowan University student for excellence in fiction writing.
  • Students should submit one work of fiction, such as a short story or a novel excerpt, in any style or genre, of no more than 3,500 words.
  • All fiction manuscripts must be submitted typed, double-spaced in a 12-point font.
 
The 2023 Rowan University Award for Poetry will be presented to a Rowan University student for excellence in poetry writing.
  • Students should submit a collection of no more than three poems in any form or style. The collection must have a title.
  • The submitting poet may choose the appropriate typography and pagination for their work.
 
The 2023 Pat B. Tweedie Award for Creative Nonfiction will be presented to a Rowan University student for excellence in writing creative nonfiction.
  • Students should submit one work of no more than 3,500 words of original creative nonfiction, such as a personal or lyric essay, personal narrative, memoir, or any other form that involves a creative treatment of a nonfiction subject.
  • All creative nonfiction manuscripts must be submitted typed, double-spaced, in a 12-point font.
  
Do not place any identifying information (such as your name or email address) in the document that you upload. Those who do will be disqualified. Please be sure to proofread your work meticulously as errors detract from the quality of your entry.

The Awards will be announced and winners will present their works, at the Rowan Art Gallery, 301 West High Street, on Thursday, April 27 at 6pm.
